Nuj Welcomes Prca Bell Pottinger Banby NUJ
The NUJ has welcomed the ruling by the Public Relations and Communications Association (PRCA) to ban Bell Pottinger from the industry trade association for five years.
The ruling came in response to a campaign led by Bell Pottinger to agitate racial tension in South Africa. The PRCA found the agency was unethical and brought the industry into disrepute.
Phil Morcom, chair of the NUJ public relations and communications industrial council, said: "The NUJ firmly endorses the ruling against Bell Pottinger. Unethical behaviour in the public relations industry brings a stain on our profession. PR companies that actively mislead the public are not only unethical, they run the risk of being seen to be contaminated by their behaviour.
“The NUJ offers valuable support and protection to PR and communications workers who are prepared to stand up to pressure to behave unprofessionally and unethically.”
Francis Ingham, director general of the PRCA, said: “Bell Pottinger has brought the PR and communications industry into disrepute with its actions and has received the harshest possible sanctions.
“The PRCA has never before passed down such a damning indictment of an agency’s behaviour.”
